Substance Abuse Expert in South Florida recognizes substance abuse trends.

BOCA RATON – Mental health and substance abuse expert Hanna McGoey discussed some of the many factors that contribute to the high rates of substance abuse in South Florida. McGoey identified tourism, pain mills, and clubbing as the top factors for drug and alcohol abuse. Identifying the factors that contribute to substance abuse rates in South Florida can help determine solutions to reduce these statistics.

McGoey has both personal and professional experience in substance abuse. McGoey earned her license as a mental health counselor (LMHC) from the New York Institute of Technology. McGoey, who is also a certified addiction professional, has been working with individuals battling addiction for 29 years. At the age of 23, McGoey was a substance abuse counselor for adolescents in prison. After working in the substance abuse field for 7 years, McGoey transitioned into helping individuals struggling with mental health issues.

With a background in both mental health and substance abuse, McGoey now conducts private practice to help individuals struggling in both areas. “Most people that have substance abuse issues that I work with in outpatient now also have psychological issues or vice versa. Most people that come in for mental health issues also have some kind of an addiction issue,” said McGoey.

McGoey has also collaborated with other experts in the substance abuse field such as Dr. Gail Horton, who has over 25 years of experience working with substance abuse addiction, at Spectrum Programs Inc.

Like many substance abuse experts, McGoey also has a history of battling addiction. Growing up, McGoey’s father struggled with alcohol addiction and suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. In addition, McGoey’s brother struggled with substance abuse addiction and copes with mental health issues. As a result of familiarity, McGoey battled alcohol addiction herself during her adolescent years. McGoey also lost her nephew to a drug overdose, which had a major impact on her career as an addiction professional.

“It is literally in my family to such a degree that I don’t have a choice, that’s how I felt,” said McGoey about pursuing a career in substance abuse.

McGoey is now the Chief Executive Officer of Growing Inc. which was launched in 1993. Growing, Inc. offers “assistance to individuals suffering from a variety of psychological and relational issues, such as anxiety, addiction, depression, and marital distress.” Growing Inc. is located in Boca Raton, Florida.
